There are seventy-one Past Masters of whom thirty-three are living. The first three living are each over eighty. They average 85 years. The next six are over seventy and have an average of 73 1/2 years. Past Masters
In the early years, Masters used to serve two or three years but since 1909 no Master has served more than one year. At that time all the line officers agreed to serve but one year. That agreement was never broken and has been followed all these years since. It is felt this arrangement has made it possible to interest men in serving, for "getting to the chair" was considered by many as taking too long a time.
