In 1866, at the age of twenty-five, Bro. William Whiting became a member of the Lodge and was accorded the honor of being elected Treasurer for that year. His records are a remarkable example of detail, neatness and penmanship. He had the previous year established his paper manufacturing business and was to go on to greater things in which his name was synonomous with all that was great and good in Holyoke. At the age of thirty-seven he was nominated by both political parties and elected Mayor of the city, and later was elected a member of Congress. His charities and support of civic institutions were widespread and knew no bounds. Finally in 1909, a year before his death, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts granted the unusual honor of permitting a Lodge to be named after a living person in the name of William Whiting Lodge.
